Today’s A Good Day To Visit Your Kit

With summer in our rear view mirror and winter just around the bend, now is a great time to take a look at your kit. Some of us will be swapping lightweight summer gear for more rugged winter attire.

Perhaps adding a pair of micro-spikes for those icy ascents, or the addition of a wider tip on our trekking poles. Don’t forget a warm pair of gloves and perhaps a set of pocket hand warmers for your emergency kit.

This is also a great time of year to review the items that you carried all summer long. Look closely at your daily use items and inspect them for any damage or excessive wear. remembering to patch any holes or stitch any seams that have started to come loose.

As you’re inspecting your gear, pay close attention to the items you didn’t use. Perhaps the spare base-layer you’ve been carrying for that ‘just in case’ wasn’t really needed. Maybe the ground cloth that you brought but never actually put under your tent can be left at home? Or that change of pants that never saw daylight can head back to your closet.

The changing of the seasons is a great time to reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and what wasn’t needed. it’ll help you naturally lighten your pack while fine tuning your gear. Rotating your gear with the seasons will also extent the life of your heavy use items.
